Pyrometric cones make a reliable guide and sure control of furnace temperature.

They’re mainly used in the ceramic industry, in firing/baking furnaces for porcelainvitreous, earthenware, sanitary- ware, spot, brick -ware refractories.

Cones are a measurement of the time-temperature process; they are not intended to be a substitution of the pirometric instrument, but operate with them.

Cones unlike the pirometric instruments can easily be placed in various zones of the furnace chamber to indicate thermical condition in those points, with the advantage of offering a permanent registration of these conditions.

Usually one uses three cones of consecutive sizes placing the cone of the desired temperature in the centre.

It is best to fix the cones with clay body and let dry before placing in the furnace and avoid humidity because it influences the cones function negatively; the cones must not be placed in direct contact with the flame nor in cold air draft.

The cone which point is even with the base gives the exact temperature wanted.
